Riga Jewish Community Congress

24.03.2009

Riga Jewish Community Congress took place on the 24 of March. 118 delegates from 18 organizations attended the congress.
The chairperson of the Riga Jewish Community Arkady Suharenko brought to the attention of the delegates major trends of the activities of the community.

He paid special attention to the projects on social aid to low-income community members, renovation of the Riga synagogue, setup of memorials and monuments on places of mass execution of Jews during Holocaust. Helping Simon Dubnov Riga Jewish Secondary School, supporting Jewish cemetery in Shmerli, creating new museum exposition on Alksnaja Street, publishing books on the history of Latvia Jewry and fighting anti-Semitism is equally important for the Riga Jewish Community’s leadership. There are several challenges for the RJC in the future: Jewish pre-war heritage issue, Riga Jewish Community house reconstruction, and development of programmes for youth and middle – aged members of the community, creation of an individual membership system, which implies personal payments. Nowadays, the Riga Jewish Community mainly exists on donations of the Board of Trustees and “Joint” financing.
The chairperson of the check-up committee Mejer Meler had reported in his speech that all the finance documentation of the community is carried out in a proper way.
Each delegate had an opportunity to speak out or put a question during the debates.
The elections took place after the debates. Arkady Suharenko and Benjamin Kaem have been re-elected to the positions of the chairperson of RJC and the deputy of the chairperson, and Mejer Meler – to the position of the chairperson of the check-up committee.
