Delegation of the Jewish community of Latvia had an honor to participate in the Global Forum of American Jewish Committee.
On June 5-7 2016, AJC Global Forum took place in Washington, D.C.
Latvian Jewish Community was represented by three delegates: Chairman of the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia Arkady Suharenko, Deputy Chairman Dmitry Krupnikov and Project Development Director Diana Lapkis.
Representative of the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia Dmitry Krupnikov made a presentation about the Jewish community in Latvia talking both about historical background and about perspectives of Latvian Jewry. Presentation available here.
At the forum, our delegation had a meeting with the Ambassador of Latvia to the United States Andris Razāns. Totally more than 70 ambassadors took part in the event.
Special attention was paid to the issue of commemoration of Holocaust. The delegation met with the US Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Nick Dean, as well as had an opportunity to visit the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The AJC Global Forum is a significant international platform that has been addressed by many presidents, foreign ministers, Members of Congress, and leading public figures.
This year forum visited major players on the world stage: U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini. Opposition Leader Isaac Herzog gave an impassioned speech about the future of Israel.
AJC presented its Moral Courage Award to Vian Dakhil, the sole Yazidi member of the Iraqi parliament, whose courageous stand against ISIS alerted the world to the massacre of religious minorities in Iraq.
