“Jews in a Changing World”

Riga, April 26–28, 2017

The Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia, the Museum “Jews in Latvia” and the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Latvia invites you to take part in the 10th International Conference “Jews in a Changing World”. The conference is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia and will emphasize the contribution of Jews to Latvia’s development.

The Jewish community historically has been an important part of the Latvian cultural and political landscape. The activities of the Jewish communities have been closely connected with the development of Latvia and the formation of its cultural and social identity.

During the conference, a wide range of issues related to the contribution of Jews to the political, economic, social and cultural life of Latvia will be discussed.

Scholars from all fields of Jewish Studies are invited to submit proposals for papers within the broader theme of the Conference. The Conference will include a special session for young researchers.

We encourage applicants to submit proposals for papers within these suggested (but not exhaustive) thematic headings:

  • Jewish Community of Latvia in a historical perspective;
  • Latvian Jews – scientists and creators of culture;
  • The role of the Jews in the political, economic and social life of Latvia;
  • Latvian Jews in the world’s cultural and political context;
  • Latvian Jews and Israel;
  • The cultural heritage of Latvian Jews;
  • The contemporary Jewish Community of Latvia.

The working languages of the conference are Latvian, English and Russian (simultaneous translation will be provided).

Speakers will be given 20 minutes each.

The deadline for the submission of a paper proposal is February 6, 2017. The results will be announced by the February 20, 2017. Papers will be selected on a competitive basis.

The Conference organizers will cover accommodation expenses. All the other organizational details will be explained in the informational e-mail for accepted proposals.
