Mariss Jansons, one of today’s most respected conductors, the national pride of Latvia, passed away. Jewish community of Latvia expresses deep condolences to the relatives, friends and all admirers of the talent of the maestro.
Maris Jansons was born in Riga in 1943 in the family of conductor Arvids Jansons and opera singer Iraida Jansone. Iraida, being Jewish, gave birth to her son in a shelter in which she was hiding during the Nazi occupation until October 1944. Her father and brother died in the Riga ghetto.
