A remembrance ceremony dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the extermination of Riga ghetto inmates was held today in Rumbula. On November 30 and December 8, the Nazis have killed 25,000 innocent people.

As every year, members of the Jewish community, students of Jewish schools, the leadership of the country and representatives of the diplomatic corps have gathered at the memorial. The President of the Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis, the Speaker of the Saeima Inara Murniece, the Israeli Ambassador to Latvia Lironne Bar-Sadeh, a former inmate of the Riga ghetto and historian Marger Vestermanis, Chairman of the Society of Latvian Jews – former inmates of ghettos and concentration camps Leo Dribin have addressed those present with a speech.

The President Raimonds Vejonis has underlined in his speech that the commemorative events in November are related not only to the past – we must not forget those terrible events in order to live on and prevent a repetition of this evil in the future.

A shared thought was the common thread of speeches of the speakers – the tragedy of the Jews in Latvia is a tragedy of all Latvian people. Together we, regardless of nationality, are Latvia!
